Iraqi MP Mohammed al-Fartousi called for a comprehensive systemic overhaul of the country's governance, declaring that massive corruption files and dangerous corrupt figures remain “untouched.”

Iraq is currently undergoing its largest anti-corruption crackdown in years, which was launched late last month by Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi to target high-level state actors and recover hundreds of billions in embezzled public funds. 

Initiated after confessions from a detained former oil official, Adnan al-Jumaili, the crackdown has seized roughly $267 million in assets, including $44 million in cash, 400kg of gold, and 100 luxury properties.

MP Demands Deep Institutional Reform 

Al-Fartousi, who represents the Maysan Governorate in the Iraqi Council of Representatives and is a member of the Badr Organization, told Channel8 that concrete steps must be taken to sanitize the state apparatus and halt the continuous waste of public funds.

“We must clean up the system—our battle is not just against corrupt individuals, but to reform the entire system from its foundations," he said.

Al-Fartousi Expresses Full Parliamentary Confidence in Judiciary 

The lawmaker expressed his strong backing for judges and called for a systemic overhaul, adding: "We urge the Honorable Chief Justice of the Supreme Court to sustain this anti-corruption campaign and fully support the judges investigating these crimes."

"The funds seized daily across various corruption cases are handled entirely under judicial supervision through official documentation," he added.

Al-Fartousi emphasized, "As members of Parliament, we maintain complete confidence in our courts, their procedures, and the absolute sovereignty and neutrality of our judiciary."

“We are certain that far larger projects and issues exist, along with highly powerful and dangerous corrupt figures who remain untouched,” he stressed.
