A delegation from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) visited the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) Organizing Bureau to reinforce political unity and discuss ongoing bilateral relations.

Both delegations, led by Pshtiwan Sadiq, Political Bureau Member and Head of the KDP Organizing Bureau, and Rebaz Birkoti, Member of the PUK Leadership Council, held talks in Erbil on Sunday. 

The Kurdistan Region remains in an extended political deadlock, leaving the Region without a newly formed cabinet for nearly 20 months following the October 2024 parliamentary elections. 

While elected lawmakers were sworn in during an inaugural legislative session in December 2024, the assembly has failed to resume normal operations since.

Despite multiple high- and low-level talks and initiatives from other parties to break the stalemate, the two major parties in the Kurdistan have struggled to reach a consensus on a new cabinet due to ongoing disagreements over government posts and the governance system.

The PUK argues that the issues extend beyond mere cabinet positions to include a genuine partnership in governance, while the KDP insists that government formation must reflect their electoral results.

KDP Official Emphasizes Dialogue to Overcome Disagreements 

Speaking to reporters after the meeting today, Pshtiwan Sadiq stated that the delegation was “very pleased” with the visit, stressing that, “Of course, this relationship has always existed and will continue to do so.”

“In general, we share a deep and long-standing relationship,” he noted. 

The KDP official highlighted that while problems, hardships, and disagreements may have occurred during certain phases, “but through dialogue, mutual understanding, and considering the supreme interests of the people of Kurdistan, God willing, we can move forward together into future steps.”

Regarding a timeframe for the upcoming high-level meeting between the two parties, Sadiq confirmed that no specific time or date has been set. 

PUK’s Birkoti Highlights Messages of Unity 

Meanwhile, PUK’s Rebaz Birkoti stated that the delegation's visit was centered on fostering “harmony, brotherhood, and unity” between the two sides. 

He also called on the media “to help us so that things can proceed smoothly.”
