Rainfall across eastern Belgium on Monday morning provided crucial assistance to firefighters working to contain the largest wildfire in the nation's history. The rapid spread of the blaze through the High Fens nature reserve had previously raised urgent fears that the flames would breach the German border, prompting precautionary evacuations.
"This will change everything. In addition to the rainwater, there will also be an increase in humidity levels," stated the fire service chief in an interview with Belgian broadcaster RTBF.
"The fire is no longer spreading toward Germany and has been partially contained," confirmed Belgian officials regarding the current status along the border.
Belgium's Royal Meteorological Institute (IRM) forecast rainfall between 5 and 9 millimeters across the High Fens reserve on Monday morning. The moisture accompanied a sharp temperature drop from last week's peak of 37°C down to around 20°C, enabling emergency crews from Belgium, Germany, and Luxembourg to halt the fire's eastern advance toward the German border town of Monschau.
Data released by the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) shows that fires have burned nearly 1.4 million acres across Europe since the start of the year. Beyond Belgium, major emergency operations remain active in northeastern Spain, where an Aragon fire consumed around 40,000 acres, and in Omiš, Croatia, where 1,000 tourists and locals were forced to evacuate.
Over the weekend, severe blazes sweeping through the Greek island of Salamina destroyed residential property and claimed the lives of an elderly couple. Strong wind gusts drove the flames directly toward populated areas, forcing authorities to evacuate 500 people by ferry.
This latest crisis underscores a record-breaking trend of extreme wildfire activity across Europe. Joint Research Centre and EFFIS tracking show that early-starting, intense heatwaves have pushed severe fire conditions into higher-latitude countries like Belgium and Germany that historically faced lower risks. In response to these structural climate challenges, the European Commission recently launched a unified wildfire strategy to deploy shared firefighting aircraft fleets and cross-border civil protection units across member states.
