German airline Eurowings will begin operating four weekly direct flights between Germany and Baghdad from December 10, according to a company statement.

The flights will operate twice weekly from Berlin and twice weekly from Düsseldorf, adding to Eurowings’ existing services connecting Erbil with several German cities.

Key Statements

“Starting December 10, Eurowings will operate four direct weekly flights from Germany to Baghdad.”

“The increase comes amid rising numbers of air passengers traveling from Germany to Iraq.”

Eurowings said the new services are aimed partly at the growing visiting friends and relatives market between Germany and Iraq.

The company also said it is entering Iraq’s air transport market amid what it described as a shortage of direct connections between Baghdad and European cities.

Eurowings said the routes could also support growing business activity between Iraq and Germany, following Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi’s visit to Germany and his call for German businesses to expand their activities in Iraq.

According to the company, measures to facilitate business travel include reducing administrative and bureaucratic obstacles and allowing eligible travelers to obtain visas on arrival rather than securing them in advance.

Eurowings said the four new weekly flights will consist of two services from Berlin and two from Düsseldorf, providing additional direct connections between Germany and the Iraqi capital.

The airline said the expansion follows an increase in demand for travel between the two countries, particularly among Iraqis living in Germany who travel to visit relatives and friends.

The company also highlighted the potential for increased business travel as economic ties between Iraq and Germany develop.

Eurowings said its expansion in Iraq forms part of a wider network strategy, following the launch of around 38 new routes across Europe and the Middle East.

FYI

The new Baghdad connections would expand direct air links between Iraq and Germany at a time when travel between the two countries includes both family-related and business traffic. Eurowings’ emphasis on the visiting-friends-and-relatives market also reflects the sizeable Iraqi community in Germany, while additional direct routes could reduce reliance on connecting flights for travelers between Baghdad and German cities.
