Kurdistan Region Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani has called the unification of the Peshmerga forces a historic achievement during a meeting at the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs.
Talabani met with the Peshmerga Affairs Deputy Minister, directors, and senior advisors in the presence of Minister Shoresh Ismail on October 6. He commended ministry officials, commanders, advisors, and others involved in the process of reorganizing the Peshmerga forces.
Talabani said the current phase is focused on training and further equipping the forces. He also said efforts are underway to include a representative from the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs on the Kurdistan Regional Government committee responsible for securing the region’s financial rights and entitlements in Iraq’s federal budget.
He added that the regional government is working to bring Peshmerga salaries in line with those of personnel in the Iraqi army. Talabani also said efforts are underway to ensure that, under Iraq’s constitution, any initiative to equip and arm the Iraqi army also includes the Peshmerga forces.
The unification and reorganization of the Peshmerga forces has been a longstanding priority for the Kurdistan Regional Government, with efforts aimed at bringing forces under a unified institutional structure.
