A security source said ten jihadists were killed in an operation that was launched across several provinces in north and central Iraq as a preemptive measure to prevent attacks planned for the month of Ramadan.

The Iraqi military said the ten people were killed over the past 24 hours. The operation involved both the regular Iraqi army and the Popular Mobilization Forces.

State-run media reported four jihadists were killed on Sunday and six Saturday in the Wadi al-Tharthar area between Salahaddin and Anbar provinces.

The United Nations said in a report in January that the Islamic State has between 3,000 and 5,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria and that Iraqi forces have been successful in targeting operatives and sleeper cells.
