Nouri al-Maliki: Masoud Barzani will not withdraw from elections

The leader of the State of Law Coalition, Nouri al-Maliki, said he has spoken to Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) leader Masoud Barzani and confirmed that he will not withdraw from the Kurdistan Region’s parliamentary elections and is waiting for an analysis of a decision from the Iraqi Federal Supreme Court.

Maliki said in an interview with the network al-Sumaria that the previous Iraqi regime left a knot in the Kurdistan Region and neighboring countries that has not been resolved.

“I have spoken to Massoud Barzani, the leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, who asks that the Kurdistan Region be treated within the framework of the constitution, and we have reaffirmed our commitment to the constitution,” he said.

Maliki said that Barzani has confirmed the KDP will not withdraw from elections but will wait for an interpretation of decisions from the federal court.

According to Maliki, Barzani believes some decisions from the federal court have deprived Kurdish people of their rights, but the Kurds cannot be marginalized and have their role erased. He stressed these problems will soon be resolved.

Maliki said one of the unresolved issues is the oil and gas law, which was voted on in 2007 and sent to the Iraqi House of Representatives.

He stated what has delayed the approval are the amendments submitted by the Kurdistan Region and the Oil Ministry.
