Eleven arrested in Iraq after drugs discovered hidden in walnut shells

The Iraqi National Security Agency (INSA) said it has arrested a gang of 11 people in connection with drug trafficking.

Two members of a gang were arrested at a checkpoint after narcotics were discovered hidden inside walnut shells.

The agency said the gang was active inside Baghdad, Basra, Diwaniya, and Wasit governorates.

A statement from the agency noted a search operation was launched after the arrest of the two individuals and all members of the gang were eventually arrested, including some with other narcotics and paraphernalia.

According to the Iraqi Human Rights Commission, the number of drug traffickers in 2022 amounted to more than 14,000 people, including 500 women and minors.
