Iraqi parliament considers raising retirement age

The Iraqi parliament’s finance committee revealed that there is a movement in the House of Representatives to amend the pension law and restore its provisions to before 2019.

Mudhar al-Karawi, a member of the finance committee in the Iraqi House of Representatives, said in a press conference the committee has held talks with the chairman of the National Pension Board to restore the retirement age, which was set at age 63.

Karawi said the House of Representatives is currently considering the issue to review and amend the pension law, because some ministries require the services of a number of their employees, in particular the medical and educational staff.

The House of Representatives in 2019 amended the pension law, reducing the retirement age from 63 to 60.

The move created a great deal of controversy among civil servants in public offices.
