Iraq brings external debt down to $9 billion

Iraqi government spokesman Basem al-Awadi said external debt decreased to about $9 billion this year compared to $19.72 billion in 2022, state media reported.

The Iraqi government said it has reduced external debt by more than 50 percent over the past two years.

Awadi said the government has passed financial decisions that slashed the debt by 50 percent, resulting in a debt of $8.9 billion this year.

The spokesman said the government took steps including restructuring debts and canceling unproductive loans
