The Iraqi government has signed two contracts with French company Total Energy to generate electricity from solar energy.

The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity said in a statement it signed a contract with Total Energy to generate 1,000 megawatts of electricity from the Artawi field in Basra.

The Iraqi government last year signed a contract with Total Energy that includes a package of oil, gas, and solar energy projects for 25 years.

Iraq also continues to increase electricity production and has previously signed an agreement with Jordan to buy electricity. It has installed several other power plants and is expected to reach 27,000 megawatts by the end of April.
