The leader of the Sadr Movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, renamed his party’s name to the Shiite National Movement.
Following the parliamentary elections on October 10, 2021, where the Sadr movement secured the most seats, a government formation agreement among other Shiite parties led to the withdrawal of Sadr’s MPs from the parliament.
In a bid to block the formation of a new government, supporters of the movement stormed the Council of Representatives, triggering clashes between Sadr’s followers and security forces. Eventually, amidst the political turmoil, Muqtada al-Sadr made the decision to step aside from active political engagement.
