PM Sudani stresses vital role of Iraqi-American partnership for Middle East stability

Prime Minister Mohammad Shiaa Al-Sudani emphasized the crucial role of the Iraqi-American relationship in ensuring stability in the Middle East.

In a piece for Foreign Affairs magazine, he highlighted the history of US involvement in Iraq, from overthrowing Saddam Hussein to rebuilding the country’s democratic foundations.

Al-Sudani emphasized the importance of nurturing the partnership between the two nations during his upcoming meeting with President Joe Biden.

Reflecting on the past two decades of Iraqi-American relations, the Prime Minister acknowledged the challenges faced and the need for a strategic and sustainable partnership.

He stressed that the cooperation between the two countries had been instrumental in defeating terrorism and rebuilding Iraq’s security forces.

Al-Sudani outlined the formation of the Supreme Military Committee to address ongoing security threats, particularly from ISIS, and to manage the gradual withdrawal of the international coalition forces.

Al-Sudani expressed his commitment to moving towards a new phase of partnership with the United States, focusing on broader cooperation beyond security and military matters.

He emphasized the need to safeguard Iraq’s sovereignty while maintaining a strong and beneficial relationship with Washington.
