Six people were killed and several others injured, among them a small child, when an attacker wielding a knife ran through a shopping center in Sydney, Australia, according to police.

The unidentified attacker stabbed multiple people before he was shot dead by a policewoman at the scene.

The incident occurred at Westfield Bondi Junction mall, which was full of customers at the time.

The motive was not immediately clear but police assistant commissioner Anthony Cooke said terrorism could not be ruled out.

A spokesperson from New South Wales Ambulance said eight patients with traumatic injuries were taken to hospitals in Sydney, including a young child.

Security camera footage showed a man wearing an Australian rugby league jersey running around the shopping center holding a knife.

Australia has a low level of violent crime and such attacks are highly unusual.

The mall has been shut down and police have urged people to avoid the area.
