Iraq is making progress in establishing a regulatory framework for the renewable energy sector after recently awarding multiple solar power projects.

The Parliament’s Electricity and Energy Committee announced its intention to engage with various officials to gather perspectives on the nation’s inaugural renewable energy law.

In an official statement, the Committee emphasized the importance of proceeding with the enactment of legislation to oversee renewable energy initiatives and operations.

Despite being a significant player in global oil production, with the world’s fifth largest oil reserves, Iraq has taken steps to diversify its energy portfolio by granting solar power contracts to companies like TotalEnergies from France and other international entities.

These projects are set to deliver a combined capacity of approximately 7.5 gigawatts (GW), with further contract offerings on the horizon.
