Iraq has given the green light to the construction of a tourism resort and a housing complex at a historical port in Basra, a key southern oil hub, according to an official announcement.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance and modernize several ports in the OPEC member nation.

Iraq is moving forward with ambitious projects, such as the construction of a massive container terminal and a 1,200-km railway connecting Basra to Turkey in the north.

Maytham Al-Safi, the information director at the Iraqi Transport Ministry, confirmed the completion of necessary procedures for the establishment of the tourism resort and housing complex at the Al-Maqal Port in Basra.

While specific details about the projects were not disclosed, Safi mentioned that there are intentions to upgrade key ports into “smart ports” as part of the development plans.
