EUAM on security sector reform in Iraq mandate extended until 2026

The Council made a decision today to extend the mandate of the EU Advisory Mission in support of Security Sector Reform in Iraq (EUAM Iraq) until April 30, 2026.

With an allocated budget of nearly €66 million for the period between May 1, 2024, and April 30, 2026, the Council aims to bolster the civilian aspects of security sector reform in Iraq through strategic objectives.

The decision to prolong the EUAM Iraq mandate is the outcome of a strategic review by the Political and Security Committee.

Launched in October 2017, in response to a request from the Iraqi government for advice on civilian security sector reform, the mission is headquartered in Baghdad with an office in Erbil.

Initially set for a one-year term, the mandate has been extended thrice, reflecting the ongoing assessment of Iraqi requirements.

EUAM Iraq’s primary goal is to enhance the civilian facets of Iraqi Security Sector Reform, aligning with national security strategies and priorities, combatting organized crime, addressing corruption, safeguarding cultural heritage, managing borders, and countering terrorism and extremism.

Collaborating with various international partners, the mission focuses on providing strategic advice and support to the Iraqi authorities responsible for security sector reform.

EUAM Iraq is tasked with offering guidance and aid to the Office of the National Security Adviser, the Ministry of Interior, and other relevant entities pertaining to civilian security sector reform.

It conducts visits at regional and provincial levels to enhance coordination nationwide in Iraq’s security sector reform efforts.
