The Iraqi High Election Commission made the decision to halt all financial and technical processes associated with the upcoming Kurdistan Region parliamentary elections.

This move comes in response to the Federal Supreme Court’s ruling to temporarily suspend the implementation of Article 2’s second paragraph, which concerns the registration and approval of candidate lists.

Jumana al-Ghalai, spokesperson for the Iraqi High Election Commission, shared with Channel8 that the Commission opted to pause the financial and technical aspects of the Kurdistan parliamentary elections until the Federal Supreme Court addresses the filed complaint.

Imad Jamil, the head of the Commission’s media team, also informed Channel8 that the court’s decision has caused challenges in progressing with their tasks on schedule, particularly in printing voting materials. “We are uncertain about the timeline for the Federal Supreme Court to resolve the complaint,” he expressed, emphasizing their inability to meet the June 10th election date.

On May 6, 2024, Masrour Barzani lodged a complaint against the Iraqi High Election Commission through his legal representatives at the Federal Supreme Court. In response, the court has decided to suspend election procedures and seat allocations until the complaint undergoes resolution.
