Spain said on Tuesday it was against deploying European forces to Ukraine after French President Emmanuel Macron refused to rule out dispatching Western troops.

“As to whether we are in favor of deploying European troops to Ukraine, we’ve already made our position clear and we do not agree,” said government spokeswoman Pilar Alegria.

“We must concentrate on the most urgent thing, which is to speed up the delivery of (military) equipment” to Kyiv, she said, saying “unity” was Europe’s “most effective weapon” against Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Macron shocked many observers when he refused on Monday to rule out sending Western ground troops to Ukraine to aid in the war against Russia’s invasion.

“There is no consensus today to send ground troops… but nothing should be excluded. We will do whatever it takes to ensure that Russia cannot win this war,” he said.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has also rejected the idea of sending European or NATO troops to Ukraine.
