The Iraqi government is taking further steps to expedite the process of returning thousands of its citizens in al-Hol refugee camp in northeast Syria.

The government of former Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi signed a deal in 2020 with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and international organizations to repatriate Iraqis there.

The camp, which has been plagued by significant security issues, hosts about 30,000 Iraqis, including many family members of Islamic State (ISIS) militants.

The Iraqi nationals from Mosul, Baghdad, Kirkuk and Anbar will be transferred to Iraq in several stages.

Thirteen phases have been completed to repatriate Iraqis in al-Hol and 15 families are scheduled to return in the 14th stage.

A camp in Mosul governorate, al-Jada camp, has been set up for al-Hol residents.
