Iraq’s Meteorological Authority warned on Sunday that a persistent seasonal thermal low-pressure system is fueling a severe heatwave across the country, with southern governorates sweltering under temperatures reaching 50°C.

Basra and Maysan recorded the highest temperatures at 50°C, followed closely by Baghdad, Karbala, Najaf, Diwaniyah, and Dhi Qar, each peaking at 48°C. The Kurdistan Region cities also felt the heat, with Erbil reaching 46°C, Duhok 43°C, and Sulaymaniyah 42°C, where partial cloud cover has increased the likelihood of isolated showers.

The authority forecasts continued extreme heat in central and southern regions under mostly clear skies, with slight temperature increases expected in some areas.

Northwesterly winds ranging from 10 to 20 km/h are predicted, with stronger gusts in central and western regions stirring light to moderate dust. Visibility may drop to 3–5 kilometers in desert areas, although most regions will maintain visibility between 8–10 kilometers.

The unrelenting heat has intensified pressure on Iraq’s already strained electricity grid, causing widespread power outages and posing serious health risks, particularly for outdoor workers, the elderly, and those with preexisting conditions.

Authorities have urged the public to stay hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours, and conserve electricity where possible.
