Focus Area: The October FAO Food Price Index and the mixed movement across cereals, dairy, meat, and sugar.
The FAO Food Price Index averaged 133.9 points in October, down from a revised 135.6 in September. That is 5.9% above a year earlier but still 16.4% below the March 2022 peak.
Cereal prices fell 4.5% on the month and were 12.6% lower than a year ago, as wheat eased on weak import demand and better production prospects, especially in Argentina.
Maize also declined after hitting a three-year high in September, pressured by the US harvest, ample expected supplies in South America, and hopes of calmer tensions in the Black Sea region.
Dairy fell 1.1% as butter and cheese prices dropped on ample supplies and subdued demand, while the meat index slipped 1.2% as ovine and bovine prices fell, though it stayed slightly above its year-earlier level.
Vegetable oils edged up 0.3%, with higher soybean and sunflower oil offsetting a drop in rapeseed oil. Sugar rose 6.6%, its fourth straight monthly increase, to the highest level since December 2024 after rainfall disrupted harvesting in Brazil, leaving it 28.8% above a year ago.
The FAO Food Price Index tracks monthly changes in international prices for a basket of commonly traded food commodities. It peaked in March 2022 following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which disrupted grain and vegetable oil exports from the Black Sea region, a major global supplier.
