Nechirvan Barzani on Saturday welcomed a decree issued by Ahmed al-Sharaa recognizing Kurds as an integral component of Syrian society, describing the move as a significant political and legal step toward building a new Syria.

In a statement, Barzani said the decree, issued a day earlier, marked an important and correct approach to ensuring the rights of all Syrians, stressing that acknowledging Kurdish identity and protecting Kurdish rights was essential for an inclusive state.

“Recognizing the Kurds as an authentic component and safeguarding their rights is an important and sound political and legal step toward building a new Syria and guaranteeing the rights of all,” Barzani said.

The Kurdistan Region president emphasized that respect for pluralism and equality should be viewed as a source of strength rather than division, describing these principles as foundations for stability, peace, and national coexistence.

While welcoming the decree, Barzani underscored that its true value would depend on its implementation, calling for the provisions to be translated into binding legislation and enshrined in Syria’s future constitution to ensure their durability and protection.

“The real and complete value of such decisions lies in transforming them into enforceable laws and embedding them in the upcoming Syrian constitution,” he said.

Barzani reaffirmed support for efforts aimed at building a Syrian state that embraces all components without discrimination or marginalization, stressing the importance of safeguarding political and cultural rights for all communities as a means of enhancing regional security and stability.

He also called on all parties to work together peacefully to develop clear mechanisms for implementing the decree and turning it into tangible policies on the ground.
