Syrian Interim Government Appoints Noureddin Issa Ahmed as Governor of Hasakah

The Syrian Interim Government has officially appointed Noureddin Issa Ahmed as the governor of Hasakah. After his designation, Issa Ahmed traveled to Damascus to meet with Syrian government officials to discuss the procedures for assuming office before beginning his duties.

Candidate Backed by SDF

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) had previously nominated Noureddin Issa Ahmed for the position. This move is part of an agreement between the SDF and the Damascus government regarding the administration of the region.

Who is Noureddin Issa Ahmed?

Engineer Noureddin Issa Ahmed, also known as Abu Omar Khanika, was born in 1969 in Qamishli. He graduated in 1993 from the Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering in Damascus. Ahmed is a prominent commander within the SDF, has held several senior positions in the AANES, and currently serves as the head of SDF’s public relations.

Division of Posts According to Agreement

Under the agreement between the SDF and Damascus, in addition to the governorship of Hasakah, the SDF has the right to nominate candidates for the positions of Deputy Minister of Defense and Deputy Director of Internal Security in Hasakah. Meanwhile, the Syrian government appointed Marwan al-Ali as Director of Internal Security in Hasakah.

Comprehensive Agreement Between SDF and Damascus

On January 30, 2026, the SDF and the Syrian government announced a comprehensive agreement. The deal includes a ceasefire between the two sides, phased integration of military forces, and unification of administrative institutions.
