The repatriation of displaced Yazidis from camps in the Kurdistan Region back to Sinjar is ongoing. Today, 34 Yazidi families left camps in Duhok province to return to their villages in Sinjar.

International Coordination

This movement was organized through an international migration project, coordinated with the Kurdistan Region’s Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Migration and Displacement.

Camp Origins

Of the families returning, 16 were from Qadiya camp and 18 from Bajid Kandala camp in Zakho district. They are resettling in villages such as Duguri, Rambusi, Gerzerg, and Sikini.

Historical Context

 On August 3, 2014, ISIS attacked Sinjar, killing thousands of Yazidis, abducting many women and girls, and displacing hundreds of thousands to Kurdistan and neighboring countries.

Reconstruction Needs

 Although Sinjar was liberated from ISIS in late 2015, widespread destruction of homes and infrastructure has slowed the return process. Yazidis continue to call for reconstruction and revitalization of their city to enable sustainable resettlement.
