- Increase takes effect in September.
- Decision completes rollback of voluntary cuts.
- Geopolitical tensions continue to affect exports.
Saudi Arabia, Russia, Iraq, and four other key OPEC+ members agreed on Sunday to increase oil production by 188,000 barrels per day starting in September, completing the rollback of a second round of voluntary production cuts despite continued disruptions to exports caused by tensions in the Middle East.
Key Statements and Focus Area
- Seven OPEC+ members approved a 188,000-barrel-per-day production increase.
- The group said the move completes the unwinding of its second voluntary production-cut package.
- Analysts expect limited immediate market impact while exports through the Strait of Hormuz remain constrained.
- OPEC+ is expected to pause further production increases in the fourth quarter.
OPEC+ Agrees to Raise Output
Saudi Arabia, Russia, Iraq, Kuwait, Kazakhstan, Algeria, and Oman agreed during an online meeting to increase oil production by 188,000 barrels per day beginning in September.
In a joint statement, the participating countries said the increase completes the restoration of production under the group's second voluntary output reduction agreement.
Market Impact Expected to Be Limited
Energy analysts said the decision was widely anticipated.
Jorge Leon of Rystad Energy said the immediate impact on global markets is likely to remain limited because export flows through the Strait of Hormuz continue to face disruptions.
He said the larger market effect will become clearer once normal shipping and export operations resume.
Production Challenges Remain
Analysts noted that several OPEC+ members are currently producing below their official quotas because of declining production capacity.
Russia also continues to face production constraints following repeated Ukrainian drone attacks on its oil infrastructure, with output remaining below its production target.
Focus Shifts to Future Quotas
With the latest increase completing the rollback of the second production-cut package, analysts expect OPEC+ to pause additional supply increases during the fourth quarter.
Attention is now expected to shift toward negotiations on production quotas for 2027.
FYI
OPEC+ introduced three rounds of voluntary production cuts between 2022 and 2023, removing nearly six million barrels per day from the market to support oil prices. Since 2025, several major producers have gradually reversed those cuts by increasing output. However, ongoing geopolitical tensions and disruptions to shipping routes in the Middle East continue to influence global oil markets.
