The Women’s Union of Kurdistan (WUK) and Hiwa Hospital have launched the "Journey of Hope" project to provide mobile mammography and breast cancer screening to women in remote and underserved areas of the Kurdistan Region.

• The Women’s Union of Kurdistan said in a statement that, “To raise health awareness and promote the early detection of breast cancer, Lava Hikmat, Director General of the Women’s Union of Kurdistan (WUK), and Dr. Yad Naqshbandy, Director of Hiwa Hospital, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to implement the Journey of Hope project.”
• WUK characterized the project as “An important step toward protecting the health of women and girls in Kurdistan.”

According to the Union, the project utilizes digital mammography and clinical breast examinations to provide early cancer screening for asymptomatic women between the ages of 40 and 69.

The WUK highlighted that the initiative primarily aims to expand medical access to remote and underserved areas where travel to urban centers is difficult.

By providing local screenings, the project ensures every woman can receive care closer to home "so that breast cancer is no longer a threat."

The Women’s Union of Kurdistan is a prominent organization focused on female empowerment and public development, having recently overseen a major structural modernization of the Slemani Maternity Emergency Teaching Hospital.  

Their project partner, Hiwa Hospital, was established in 2007 as a premier public oncology center that treats approximately 900 patients daily completely free of charge.

To streamline care, Hiwa Hospital recently launched Iraq’s first fully integrated electronic health platform, digitizing tens of millions of cancer treatment records.
