Speaking to reporters on Thursday at the Slemani Summit on the recent meeting between Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and Deputy PM Qubad Talabani, PUK spokesperson Gaznay said, “It was a positive meeting, but the distribution of positions was not discussed at all.”

He also confirmed that no date has been set for a future meeting between both parties, adding that, “What is important is that our doors remain open for dialogue, and we want to form a government based on a framework of genuine partnership.”

Gaznay emphasized that the political alliance with the New Generation Movement “remains in place.”

“If such a matter were on the table, we would have announced it publicly,” he added.

The PUK spokesperson also commented on the importance of the Slemani Summit, which Iraqi President Nizar Amedi and Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani attended, saying that, “The holding of these meetings reflects the reality that Slemani has always aspired to be a leader in bringing all diverse perspectives together to discuss economic dimensions, which we need now more than ever in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.”

He underlined the critical need for political forces and parties to convene and engage in dialogue on pressing economic and current issues, particularly amidst the ongoing political deadlock.

The government formation talks follow a recent meeting between Masrour Barzani and Qubad Talabani, with some media reporting both parties reached an agreement on establishing the delayed cabinet.

Concurrently, the NGM spokesperson recently announced that the group will firmly remain in the political opposition and will not accept any formal executive cabinet seats in the incoming administration.

Yesterday, Mahmoud Mohammed, spokesman for the Kurdistan Democratic Party, told reporters that while some obstacles to forming the new cabinet remain, they have been discussed in recent days.

At the same time, Jaafar Eminki, a member of the KDP Political Bureau, said the meetings are ongoing and there is “good understanding” and “mutual trust” between both sides.

During a meeting with Italian Ambassador Niccolò Fontana on Wednesday, Qubad Talabani highlighted that the new government should be “based on genuine partnership that is capable of managing the requirements of the current stage.”
