North Korea has instructed its border troops to take “prompt and resolute action” if South Korean forces threaten their safety, state media reported Wednesday, amid rising tensions over military fortifications and alleged border crossings.

Key Statements and Focus Areas

North Korea Issues Warning to Border Troops

North Korean Army Marshal Pak Jong Chon inspected border fortifications on Tuesday, accompanied by Kim Yo Jong, the influential sister of leader Kim Jong Un, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

Kim Yo Jong said new firepower units had “taken their firing positions” along the border, KCNA reported.

Pak urged troops to strengthen defenses and turn the border into an “impregnable fortress.”

Pyongyang Rejects Seoul’s Allegations

North Korea rejected South Korea’s claims that its personnel had crossed the Military Demarcation Line, with Pak dismissing the allegations as an “absurd assertion” intended to shift blame.

Pak said North Korean forces knew the location of the border and were carrying out their duties within their own territory, according to KCNA.

South Korea Warns Against Further Provocations

Seoul has pledged to respond firmly to further provocations by Pyongyang, following North Korea’s threats to strengthen its military posture along the frontier.

South Korea has also called on Pyongyang to suspend its fortification work after accusing North Korean mines of causing a blast last month that seriously injured two South Korean soldiers.

North Korea has ordered its troops stationed along the border with South Korea to respond decisively if their safety is threatened, state media reported Wednesday, raising concerns about a possible military confrontation along the heavily fortified frontier.

The warning followed a border inspection on Tuesday by North Korean Army Marshal Pak Jong Chon and Kim Yo Jong. During the visit, Kim said newly deployed firepower units had taken up firing positions, according to KCNA.

The latest exchange of warnings follows months of rising tensions. North Korea began reinforcing its border defenses in April 2024, while Seoul has accused Pyongyang of sending up to 7,000 workers to the frontier this year and reported around 50 crossings of the Military Demarcation Line onto South Korean territory.

Pyongyang rejected those allegations on Wednesday. Pak described Seoul’s claims as an attempt to shift responsibility and insisted that North Korean forces were operating within their own territory.

South Korea has also accused North Korea of laying mines that caused an explosion last month, seriously injuring two South Korean soldiers. Seoul has called on Pyongyang to halt its border fortification activities.

The two Koreas remain technically at war because the 1950–1953 Korean War ended with an armistice rather than a peace treaty. The Demilitarized Zone separates the two sides, although it remains one of the world's most heavily militarized frontiers.

FYI

The latest warnings highlight the risk that border construction, disputed crossings and military deployments could trigger an unintended confrontation between the two Koreas. The absence of a formal peace treaty means that military incidents occur against a longstanding backdrop of unresolved conflict.

Both governments are presenting their actions as defensive: Pyongyang says it is securing its territory, while Seoul views the reported crossings and fortification activities as potential threats. The allegations remain contested, and the latest statements do not establish that either side is preparing for a wider conflict.
