Speaker of the Kurdistan Parliament’s fifth term Rewaz Fayaq said on Saturday that the law governing the upcoming elections in the Kurdistan Region is fair.

Fayaq said that from now on, the religious and ethnic “minorities will have their own real representatives” in the Kurdistan Parliament.

She believes that the election commission overseeing the process is somewhat more trustworthy than the Kurdistan Region’s commission.

On February 21, the Iraqi Federal Court annulled the amendment to the Kurdistan parliamentary elections law, dissolved the Kurdistan Region Electoral Commission, and restructured the elections into four districts.

It further deemed the allocation of 11 seats reserved for minorities in the Kurdistan Parliament as “unconstitutional” and mandated that the Iraqi High Electoral Commission would oversee the elections, replacing the Kurdistan Region Electoral Commission.
