An air strike killed 36 members of a family in central Gaza, survivors said on Saturday, and the Israeli military says it is looking into the incident.

The Tabatibi family had gathered to break the fast on Friday evening when the air strike hit the building where they were staying in Nuseirat. The Hamas-run health ministry has blamed Israel for the strike.

Some of the dead had to be wrapped in white cloth stained with blood due to a shortage of body bags. The family was also unable to retrieve all of the bodies because they lack equipment to remove the rubble.

The Hamas-run government’s press office reported 60 “deadly air strikes” from Gaza City in the north to Rafah in the south.

A muezzin and two of his sons were killed in a separate air strike in Rafah on Saturday.

The war in Gaza began on October 7, when Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel and killed about 1,160 people, the majority civilians.

Israel’s retaliatory campaign has killed at least 31,553 people, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.
