KDP leader denies party has boycotted Kurdistan Region elections

The leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Masoud Barzani, said the KDP has not boycotted the Kurdistan Region’s parliamentary elections and is not afraid of them.

Barzani met with US Ambassador to Iraq Alina Romanowski and pointed out the reasons behind the KDP’s statement, saying the party initiated elections in the early 90s.

The KDP leader said the party has always supported holding elections and was not afraid of elections, but has issues with the electoral method and “the danger of destroying the principles of coexistence and eliminating the participation” of minority communities in political life.

“They also changed the decisions and laws of the Kurdistan Region in an unconstitutional and illegal manner, oppressing the communities and the entire Kurdish people,” he said.

He stated the KDP has not boycotted elections but supports “clean, transparent, and secure elections free from external interference.”

Barzani told the US ambassador there was a clear and comprehensive agreement with Baghdad’s Coordination Framework and none of the important points of the agreement had been implemented.
