Iraqi government should deal directly with KRG: Deputy Finance Minister

Iraqi Deputy Finance Minister Masoud Haider.

Iraqi Deputy Finance Minister Masoud Haider said that the federal government should handle matters concerning the Kurdistan Region through the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

Haider said that according to the constitution, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has the authority to manage financial affairs through its Ministry of Finance and any actions contrary to this are unconstitutional.

He further said that the bank accounts of employees in any bank licensed by the central bank are legally recognized, and these banks should solely cooperate with the Kurdistan Region.

Haider said that the KRG Ministry of Finance should deposit the salaries of employees into bank accounts for those who possess them and for those without bank accounts, salaries should be disbursed in cash, with a mandate to open bank accounts within six months.

The statement comes as the Federal Court’s ruling on February 21 affirmed that Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) institutions have the authority to directly engage with the Iraqi Ministry of Finance to facilitate the banking of their employees’ salaries.
