PUK President meets Russian FM to discuss regional security, cooperation

Bafel Jalal Talabani, the president of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Moscow, focusing on the region’s latest political, economic, and security developments.

The meeting aimed to strengthen ties between the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, and Russia to safeguard mutual interests and enhance cooperation.

Expressing condolences for the recent terrorist attack in Moscow, Bafel Jalal Talabani emphasized the importance of international efforts to combat extremism and address security challenges to ensure global peace.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation released a statement saying, “Both sides reiterated their support for the efforts to ensure the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Iraq, to respect its constitution, and to prevent the transformation of this multiethnic state into a battleground for settling scores and confrontation between external actors.”

Discussions also touched upon the PUK’s strategic approach to recent changes, underscoring the significance of political relations to maintain stability and sovereignty in the region.

Both leaders reiterated their commitment to peace and non-interference in Iraq’s internal affairs, emphasizing the preservation of political stability in the region.

They explored the longstanding relations between the Kurdish people and Russia, highlighting the growing cooperation and coordination between the two parties under President Mam Jalal’s guidance.
