Over 36 million Iraqis registered in national ID card system

Iraqi Interior Minister Abdul Amir Shamari said that more than 36 million Iraqis have been registered in the national card system.

Shamari said that old identification documents will become invalid starting from April 1.

During an event, he declared that the second phase of the national card project in Baghdad, in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, aimed to verify residency information and data accuracy. 

He said the initial phase of the project began on July 15, 2015 and to date, through 328 offices spanning all provinces, including the Kurdistan Region, a total of 36,751,362 individuals have been registered in the national card system.

The Interior Minister said they have issued a directive to halt the processing of paper documents like nationality certificate and civil status identity cards, which will cease to be valid starting April 1.
