Head of Iran’s Traffic Police, Hassan Moemeni, said that domestically manufactured vehicles were responsible for 83 percent of traffic accident deaths in Iran and the remaining 17 percent were attributed to foreign-made vehicles.

Hassan Moemeni told the ISNA news agency that 62 percent of fatal crashes were attributed to Peugeots and Kia Prides.

Previously, Iranian lawmaker Mohsen Pirhadi said that traffic accidents stand as the third leading cause of death in Iran, adding that 90 percent of car parts in the country are not manufactured to standard specifications, and there is insufficient monitoring of the manufacturing process.

According to Iranian officials, over a million cars are produced annually in Iran while statistics indicate that 90 percent of these cars are derived from the Pride model and two other discontinued models, the Peugeot 405 and Peugeot 206, which have not been manufactured for over 20 years.

Two days ago, Deputy Traffic Police Chief Siawsh Mohebbi said that during the last 15 days and the Newroz holidays, 617 people were killed and 16,583 were injured in traffic accidents.
