Erbil Civil Defense said 208 fires occurred in Erbil from the beginning of this year to March 21, causing billions of dinars in damage and the deaths of three people.

Karwan Mirawdali, the spokesman for the Erbil Civil Defense Directorate, told Channel8 that from January 1, 2024 to March 21, 208 outbreaks of fire have occurred in Erbil province, the most prominent being the fire at Langa market.

He said the material damage from the fires amounted to billions of dinars, especially the incident at Langa market, where 185 shops burned down, followed by the fire at warehouses in Qushtapa, which caused huge material damage.

The spokesman said three people have died in fires this year, including an oil and gas police officer who died from smoke inhalation, a person who died in the explosion of a bottle of gas, and a person who died in a car fire.

According to the results of an investigation, 40 percent of the fires were caused by electric short circuits.

Mirawdali said the quality of electrical appliances is poor, resulting in fires.
