Iranian police arrested three suspected Islamic State (ISIS) members who allegedly were planning attacks at the end of Ramadan, state media said on Saturday.

The suspects were arrested in Karaj in the northwestern province of Alborz, including Mohammed Zaker, who was allegedly a “senior member” of the group, IRNA news agency said.

“The police in Alborz province arrested three members of the Islamic State group who were planning a suicide attack during the end of Ramadan celebrations,” according to IRNA.

The news agency did not disclose when the arrests happened or whether they included foreign citizens.

IRNA also reported the arrest of eight alleged accomplices.

Local media on Tuesday reported the arrest of two alleged ISIS members in the city of Qom on Tuesday.

ISIS claimed responsibility for twin bombings in the southern city of Kerman in January, that killed more than 90 people.

The bombings occurred during a ceremony commemorating the death of Qasem Soleimani, a senior Revolutionary Guards general who was killed in a US drone strike in 2020.

IRNA said on Saturday the number of “martyrs” killed in recent attacks by jihadists near the border with Pakistan had risen to 16, and that all were members of security forces.

State media said earlier that 10 members of security forces and 18 members of the Jaish al-Adl group were killed in clashes.

The Sunni Muslim rebel group Jaish al-Adl was created in 2012 and is considered a terrorist organization by both Iran and the United States.
