Thousands investigated in Turkey every year on charges of insulting Erdogan

Thousands of people, including hundreds of minors, are arrested every year on charges of insulting Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

According to Turkey’s Justice Ministry, last year alone, the prosecutor’s office opened 25,520 cases against people who according to the court, insulted Erdogan. Out of this figure, 7,491 cases were taken to court.

Last year, 18,856 people were treated as suspects of insulting the Turkish president, under Articles 299 and 301.

According to the statistics, 6,897 people have been identified and accused in court, 1,602 have been convicted, 1,982 have been released on condition that they do not repeat the crime, and 1,774 have been acquitted.

According to the Ministry of Justice, 673 cases were opened against 552 people under the age of 18 last year.
