UK Foreign Office responds to Channel8 question on Kurdistan elections

The UK Foreign Office said Britain is trying to find a solution to holding free parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan Region, in response to a question from Channel8 on the polls.

The US State Department also responded on Monday to a question from Channel8 on the elections, stating the United States is aware of the Kurdistan Democratic Party’s (KDP) withdrawal from the elections and they have been trying to find a solution to the issue since the end of March.

The British Foreign Office said it encourages the political parties in the Kurdistan Region to continue their negotiations to hold elections in accordance with international standards, adding every individual in society has the right to participate in the process.

The Foreign Office said they will use their diplomatic relations to resolve all issues between Erbil and Baghdad, including the issues of the budget, security, gas, and oil.

A source in the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) told Channel8 that the party would not participate in the elections and insists on not submitting the names of its candidates to the electoral commission.

The source said the KDP met with members of the electoral commission on Sunday and gave their final answer, that they will not participate in the elections.
