Heavy rains swell Urmia dams, 63% of dams flooded in East Kurdistan 

Recent heavy rainfall has led to a significant increase in water levels across Urmia province, with 63% of dams in East Kurdistan now flooded, according to the executive director of Urmia Water Company.

Majid Rostgari reported that the volume of water in Urmia province’s dams has surged to 1.6 billion cubic meters following the recent rains, marking a 1.6% increase compared to the same period last year.

The dams of Bokan, Sardasht, Mahabad, and Kani Sib currently hold 1 billion 251 million cubic meters of water, accounting for 77% of the total water in the province’s 16 dams.

Rostgari highlighted that seven dams, including Mahabad, Hassanloy Naqda, Mako, Shahid Qanbari, Karamabad, Puldasht, Kani Sib, and Sardasht, have seen a rise in water levels compared to last year.

Currently, Urmia province boasts 16 dams with a combined capacity of approximately 2.5 billion cubic meters. Across Iran, there are over 200 dams holding a total capacity of 21.13 billion cubic meters of water.
