Israeli military airstrikes struck a Syrian military position in retaliation to rocket fire on the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights, as confirmed by military sources on Tuesday.

The exchange of fire occurred shortly after an airstrike, attributed to Israel, demolished the Iranian consulate in Damascus, resulting in the deaths of senior military commanders and escalating tensions in the region.

According to AFP, the Israeli military stated that “warplanes targeted Syrian army military infrastructure in the Mahajjah area overnight,” situated approximately 30 kilometers (20 miles) from the demilitarized zone that separates the opposing forces.

Israel’s army reported identifying a rocket launch from Syrian territory on Monday, resulting in no casualties. In response, artillery fire was directed towards the origin of the attack.

Following the deadly strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus on April 1, which claimed the lives of seven Iranian Revolutionary Guards, including two generals, Israel has heightened its military preparedness amid threats of retaliation from Tehran.

This recent escalation adds to existing tensions in the region, with Israel engaged in conflicts against Hamas in Gaza and experiencing frequent exchanges of fire with its Lebanese counterpart, Hezbollah.
