Kurdistan Region to request release of ill, elderly prison inmates

The director of prisons in the Kurdistan Region has requested the release of inmates who are ill, inmates who are over the age of 70, and minors between the ages of 11 and 13.

Ihsan Abdul-Rahman, the director of prisons in the Kurdistan Region, told Channel8 there are rumors that Iraq will issue an amnesty for several inmates. If implemented, it will not include the Kurdistan Region, indicating the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) must issue its amnesty.

He said a written request has been sent to the KRG presidency asking for an amnesty for inmates who are over the age of 70, inmates who are ill, and minors between the ages of 11 and 13, provided their crimes were not related to terrorism or drugs.

According to Abdul-Rahman, there are 5,327 inmates in six prisons in the Kurdistan Region, with 20 percent convicted of terrorism-related offenses and 20 percent convicted of drug trafficking or the use of drugs, amounting to 1,249 people.
