Iran’s Zrebar Dam overflows due to rainfall

Aresh Aryanezhad, the director-general of the water company of Sanandaj county, said the Zrebar Dam has overflowed along with eight other dams in the county.

Aryanezhad said Zrebar has the capacity to absorb 65 million cubic meters of water and is now overflowing with 120 liters per second.

He added, the water level of Zrebar Dam has increased by 52 percent compared to last year due to the rainfall this year.

So far this year, the dams of Abbas-e-Ava, Sabadlu-e-Bana, Chirawesi-Saqqez, Garani Meriwan, Zevey-Kamran, Qeshlaq and Azadi-Sana have been overflown.

Zrebar Dam was constructed in 1995 and it collects water that flows from the lake.

Zrebar Lake is located two kilometers east of Marivan. It covers an area of 20 square kilometers and holds 30 million cubic meters of water. The lake is five and a half kilometers long and more than two kilometers wide. The depth of the lake is between two and five and a half meters.

The source of Zrebar Lake is due to springs. The lake is listed as one of the national natural monuments of Iran. A large variety of fish and wildfowl live around the lake and more than 200,000 tourists visit it every year.
