The United Nations said six million tons of food is wasted annually in Iraq, with no effective policies to reduce it.

The UN also stated the amount of food waste in Iraq is expected to increase.

The figures are part of a UN report on food waste worldwide and according to the report, Iraq ranks sixth internationally with 143 kilograms of food wasted per person annually.

Social tradition is believed to be responsible for the waste, as Iraqis typically prepare more food than needed at home, especially during holidays.
