Iraqi Interior Ministry: National ID card to be basis of all transactions

The Director General of Passports, Residence and Civil Status of Iraq has said that the national card will be the basis for all official transactions in Iraqi offices.

Nashat Ibrahim Khafaji, the Director General of Passports, Residence and Civil Status, told the official Iraqi news agency that there is preliminary coordination with the Ministry of Commerce, Planning and the High Election Commission to use the national card as the basis for all transactions.

Khafaji said that the basis of e-government is the national card, because the information is accurate, in addition to facial reading, iris recognition, and fingerprints and citizens can easily identify themselves to offices.

According to the director, the prime minister and the interior minister have made this project a priority and attach great importance to it, adding that offices have the ability to register all Iraqi citizens and are still continuing the process.

Earlier, the Interior Ministry had set April 1 as the deadline for the validity of citizenship and civil status identification cards
