Iraqi couple arrested in Germany on suspicion of genocide against Yazidis: VOA

An Iraqi couple linked to the Islamic State (ISIS) was arrested in Germany on suspicion of committing genocide and their alleged crimes against two Yazidi children, Voice of America (VOA) said on Friday.

The German federal public prosecutor announced Twana H.S. and Asia R.A. were arrested in Regensburg and Roth County and “are strongly suspected of genocide” against Yazidis in 2014.

The couple are originally from the Kurdistan Region, VOA said, and according to prosecutors, they enslaved a 5-year-old and 12-year-old child, who Twana allegedly raped, with Asia allegedly facilitating.

Yazidi activists say the girls are now under the protection of German authorities, according to VOA.

Germany has prosecuted other cases of genocide against Yazidis.

In 2021, a court in Frankfurt found Taha al-Jumailly guilty “of involvement in the slaughter of more than 3,000 Yazidis and enslavement of 7,000 women and girls,” as well as the murder of a 5-year-old girl he had left to die chained to a window, VOA said.
