Iraq advances efforts to join WTO, Commerce Minister affirms

“We continue our efforts to become a member of the World Trade Organization,” emphasized Iraqi Commerce Minister Asir Daoud in a recent statement.

Daoud disclosed that two preliminary offer files have been finalized and submitted to the World Trade Organization Secretariat through official channels, marking a significant milestone in Iraq’s quest for membership.

Highlighting the strategic importance of this initiative, Daoud reiterated that this progress aligns with the Iraqi government’s overarching objectives to bolster international trade and sustainable development, showcasing Iraq’s dedication to fostering global economic integration and expanding economic collaborations.

The Commerce Minister underscored that the World Trade Organization (WTO) has embraced Iraq’s reengagement and commitment to pursuing membership, recognizing the positive impact it could have on Iraq’s economic prospects.

The WTO, whose overarching objective is to empower its members to leverage trade for enhancing living standards, generating employment opportunities, and enhancing the well-being of their populations, serves as the custodian of the global trade regulations and assists emerging economies in strengthening their trade capabilities.
