Turkey has strongly criticized the recent French resolution regarding historical events involving the Assyrian and Chaldean communities during the Ottoman Empire period, labeling it as “null and void.”

The resolution, passed by French lawmakers, was denounced by Turkey, which deemed the accusations unfounded and a deliberate distortion of historical facts for political purposes.

In a statement issued by the Turkish Foreign Ministry, it emphasized the lack of legal and historical basis of the resolution, pointing out that similar attempts had been made in the past by members of the ruling party.

The ministry condemned the politicization of historical events and reiterated that parliamentary bodies do not possess the authority to make judgments on historical matters.

Furthermore, Turkey highlighted that the resolution goes against the principles outlined in the 1948 U.N. Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, emphasizing that only competent courts are authorized to rule on allegations of genocide.

This rejection comes after the French government refrained from supporting a similar resolution passed by the French Senate last year.

Turkey’s strong stance reaffirms its position on historical accuracy and the appropriate channels for addressing allegations of genocide, emphasizing the need for objective and evidence-based assessments of historical events.
