Labour Day: Worker fatalities on the rise in the KRI

Over the past two years and four months, a total of 113 workers have tragically lost their lives, with numerous others sustaining injuries in the Kurdistan Region.

Concerning figures obtained from the Kurdistan Workers’ Union indicate a worrying trend in workplace safety.

In the year 2022, a total of 57 workers lost their lives in various incidents across the Kurdistan Region. This included 22 workers in Erbil, 21 in Sulaimani, 9 in Duhok, and 5 in Halabja.

The following year, in 2023 and the first four months of 2024, an additional 56 workers lost their lives. These fatalities were distributed as follows: 14 workers in Erbil, 24 in Sulaimani, 7 in Duhok, 10 in Garmian, and 1 in Zakho.

These statistics underscore the urgent need for enhanced safety measures and increased awareness to prevent further tragedies in the region’s workplaces.
